California Giant Mixture Zinnias can be started indoors 4–5 weeks before the last frost or directly sown outside after the soil warms to about 70°F. They grow best in warm conditions around 75°F and prefer well-drained soil, tolerating drought once established but needing some water early on. These flowers produce large, colorful blooms all summer until the first frost and may even self-seed. They are great for gardens, containers, and cut flower arrangements, and they attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The petals are edible in moderation for humans but may be toxic to animals. Zinnias were first documented in 1789 and named after German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn.
