Cultivating Climate Resilience Through Seed Saving
As climate change continues to impact growing conditions, seed saving has become an essential practice for building resilient community gardens. By preserving seeds from healthy, well-adapted plants, gardeners can protect biodiversity, strengthen local food systems, and cultivate varieties that thrive in their unique environments. Seed saving also helps communities become more self-sufficient by reducing reliance on commercially purchased seeds and preserving locally adapted crops for future generations.
This September, Green Guerillas and Alexx Caceres from East New York Farms invite community gardeners to join the Cultivating Climate Resilience Through Seed Saving workshop series. Part of Green Guerillas' Climate Resilience Toolkit, this free, three-part, hands-on series will introduce participants to the fundamentals of collecting, cleaning, storing, and preserving seeds. Participants will also learn how seed saving supports climate adaptation, protects genetic diversity, and contributes to healthier, more resilient gardens across New York City.
Each workshop offers an opportunity to connect with fellow gardeners while gaining practical skills that can be applied in your own community garden. Participants will begin building a mini seed library toolkit and explore how sharing seeds strengthens neighborhoods and fosters long-term environmental stewardship. Whether you're new to seed saving or looking to expand your knowledge, this workshop series will equip you with the tools and confidence to help your garden and your community, grow stronger for seasons to come.
