At a meeting on Wednesday December 30, 2015 with community gardeners and greening groups (including Green Guerillas), City representatives announced a final decision made by the Mayor to determine the fates of community gardens on HPD land.
HPD will transfer 34 community gardens to the Parks Department to be preserved, while 9 community gardens sites will be displaced by affordable housing developments – including 7 active community gardens.
It is good news for NYC’s community gardening movement that 34 community gardens will be preserved, but devastating for the gardeners and community members who will lose 7 precious green spaces and outdoor community centers. The City has promised to find alternate sites for community gardeners – but it remains to be seen how large or how viable these alternate sites will be.
