Community Gardens on HPD Land Still at Risk

| May 21st, 2015

Earlier this year the City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) published a list of 181 sites available for developers to build housing through their New Infill Homeownership Opportunities Program (NIHOP) and Neighborhood Construction Program (NCP), including sites that are community gardens.

The New York City Community Garden Coalition and 596 Acres have worked hard to raise awareness about this issue, mobilize people, and support community gardeners. Unfortunately, twenty community gardens remain on the list of possible development sites even though HPD has hundreds of vacant sites it can utilize for these programs.

In a letter to commissioner Vicki Been, Green Guerillas urged HPD to remove the community garden sites from the development list and engage in discussions about how to protect and preserve these precious green spaces.

Please add your voice to the calls for the community gardens to be removed from HPD’s list and ask that they be protected rather than offered as development sites.
