Green Guerillas gave away a great selection of bulbs, cover crop seeds, fruit trees, and berry bushes to East Village and Lower East Side community gardeners at our October 27th giveaway. Gardeners traded garden stories and enjoyed refreshments at the Neighborhood Preservation Center.
This summer our youth tillers partnered with Greenthumb AmeriCorps member, Matt Mili to help students and teachers at Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Boys and Girls High School break ground on a new urban farm. There are lots of ideas for the future, lots of places that can be converted into fertile spaces to grow food and build community. Green Guerillas will continue to explore ways to help keep the momentum going into 2013 and be part of this growing trend.
Green Guerillas wrapped up our second East Village Community Garden Walking Tour on Saturday, October 6th. It has been our pleasure this summer to help more than 60 people experience the beauty, culture, and history of the unique community gardens in the East Village. The Liz Christy Garden is looking better than ever. We could think of worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon.
At the end of August, Green Guerillas organized a spirited celebration to mark the end of the 2012 Youth Tillers program. Our 10 amazing youth tillers capped off a great summer of gardening, farming, composting, and food justice by spending an afternoon in the Phoenix Community Garden in Ocean-Hill Brownsville with GGs staff and community gardeners. We were pleased to give these future farmers and leaders the recognition they deserved before they went back to school or went off to college.
